The rakhi you actually want, tied to mithai from the right halwai, is sold in India - not at an Indian grocery abroad. Here is how to get the real thing to your brother or sister in Canada or the USA, in time.
Raksha Bandhan is a small thread and an enormous feeling. When the family is split across continents, that thread has to travel - and the rakhi you actually want, tied to the mithai from the right halwai, is sold in India, not at an Indian grocery in Mississauga or Edison. Here is how to get the real thing to your brother or sister in time.
Why the rakhi you want is only sold in India
The designer rakhi, the cartoon one your nephew will love, the silver-and-rudraksh one for a grown brother - these come from Indian sellers, local shops and Instagram boutiques that ship only within India. The export-grade rakhi in a foreign store is rarely the one you had in mind.
Building the perfect Rakhi box
A complete Raksha Bandhan parcel is more than a thread:
- The rakhi (or rakhis): designer, kids', bhabhi lumba, or a set for the whole family.
- Mithai and dry fruits: from a real halwai - stick to dry sweets and packaged dry fruits that travel well (see below).
- A puja thali: roli, chawal, a diya and a small sweet, so the tikka can be done properly.
- A handwritten note: the part that actually makes it Raksha Bandhan.
What survives the journey
International transit is unkind to fresh sweets. For anything crossing to Canada or the USA:
- Choose dry mithai (kaju katli, soan papdi, dry-fruit sweets) over milk-based, which is both perishable and restricted by customs.
- Keep everything in sealed commercial packaging with a printed ingredient label.
- Order early - the sweets, not the shipping, are the perishable part.
Whether your sibling is in India or abroad, the box is the same idea: the real rakhi and the real mithai, sourced from India and sent to their door.
Timing it right
Raksha Bandhan falls in August. Order your box three to four weeks ahead - it gives us time to source the specific rakhis and sweets you want, consolidate them, and ship with tracking so it arrives before the day, not after.
Ready to send your rakhi?
Message us on WhatsApp and tell us who it is for and what you would like inside. We will source the rakhis and mithai from India, build the box, and get it there in time to tie the thread that matters.
