A homesick student has a very specific cure: the masala their cooking needs, snacks from the shop near home, a kurta for the dorm Diwali party. Here is how to send a care package from India that clears customs and actually helps.
Your daughter has been in Waterloo for two months and the video calls are getting shorter. Nothing is wrong - she is just homesick, and homesick has a very specific cure: the masala her cooking actually needs, the snacks from the shop near home, a kurta for the Diwali party in the dorm. Here is how to send a care package from India that clears customs and actually helps.
The homesick starter kit
The things a new student misses most are small, light, and impossible to find well abroad:
- A ready-made masala dabba: everyday spices, plus the specific blends home cooking depends on.
- Ready mixes and instant staples - the shortcut meals for exam week.
- Dry snacks, namkeen and good chai - the comfort items that are never quite right in foreign stores.
- Small home touches: a favourite mug, a photo, a diya for festival nights.
The festival kit
Diwali, Holi and Raksha Bandhan hit hardest away from home. A small ethnic outfit, a string of lights and a box of dry sweets let a student celebrate properly in a dorm room thousands of miles away.
What NOT to send
The fastest way to have a care package seized or delayed is to pack the wrong food:
- No homemade or fresh food - it will not clear customs.
- No milk-based sweets - dairy is heavily restricted entering Canada and the USA.
- No meat products, loose seeds or fresh produce.
- No liquids that can leak, and nothing so valuable it triggers a big duty bill.
The rule of thumb: commercially sealed, shelf-stable, and free of meat and dairy usually clears. Homemade and fresh does not - however much love went into it.
The maths of one good box
Four separate courier envelopes cost far more than one consolidated box. Packing a full 5-10 kg carton of spices, snacks and comfort items into a single shipment makes the per-item cost genuinely reasonable - and it is one parcel to track, not four.
Send one this term
Message us on WhatsApp with what you would like to send and where your student is. We will source it in India, pack it to clear customs cleanly, and ship it as one box - a little bit of home, delivered.
